- Derive the meaning, from contextual cues, of unknown and unfamiliar signs to deduce sentence meaning for familiar subjects.
- Extract main points from recorded Auslan texts about familiar subjects when signed relatively slowly and clearly.
- Comprehend simple technical instructions and detailed directions provided in Auslan.
- Follow the main points of live discussion between proficient or native signers when delivered in standard sign.
- Process vocabulary and grammar for signed exchanges on familiar matters.
- Use and show good control, but with some significant error and circumlocution, of an elementary vocabulary repertoire of signs dealing with familiar subjects.
- Use reasonably accurate signed sentence patterns about familiar subjects so that meaning and questions are understood but with some self-correction.
- Present in Auslan on familiar subjects.
- Engage in spontaneous Auslan conversations on familiar subjects.
- Initiate, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
- Pronounce signs clearly and intelligibly but with an “accent” sometimes evident and with occasional mispronunciations.
- Continue with relative ease throughout the conversation with some infrequent pauses and repetition.
- Follow signing of proficient or native speakers when clearly articulated in standard sign but with some words and phrases repeated.
- Ask for clarification or elaboration of signing when not understood.
